A great weekend trip to Tikal.

A great weekend trip to Tikal.

Hermano Pedro, Antigua Guatemala.

“Preach the Gospel at all times, when necessary use words.”-St. Francis of Assisi. This is exactly how the Lord has been teaching me these past few days. I am in my first 2 weeks of internship of social work and just 2 days in, I have been overwhelmed with love. I would try to explain everything: my feelings, precious stories about the patients, and how amazing it is that I have the opportunity to be the hands & feet of God, but no words could do justice. (& this post would turn into a book).

When I see you back in the states I would love to have “story time with Mette about Guatemala” over a cup of coffee.

Until then, I ask you all to pray for the disabled of Hermano Pedro, from the precious old woman whose wrinkles tell her story, to the sweet child whose eyes speak for everything she can’t say. God is present in this place, to the left & the right, whispering from behind into my ear “this is the way, walk in it.”

Beaches, turtles, & hammock after hammock…life in the Guat is pretty amazing.

One incredible Guatemalan weekend at the Caribbean coast. This weekend? The Pacific coast.

Ruins make great climbing parks. Everyday is an adventure in Guatemala.

Climbed Volcán Pacaya and roasted marshmallows on the hot lava rocks!

Today was an eye opener as we visited the city dump of Guatemala City where families live and work. The conditions are gut-wrenching, but amidst all the garbage beauty finds its way to shine in the faces and smiles of the children and families.

Día de Independencia en Guatemala! ¡VIVA GUATEMALA!

Today is Independence day. Right now thunder is roaring and the rain is pouring…but I can still hear the bands in the streets! Parades and crowds have filled the air with music and pride of Guatemala. The past few days have been very spirited and every minute is a fiesta. Tonight Parque Central will be the main scene for the big party as they recognize 190 years of Independence. September 15, 1821. ¡Viva Guatemala! (I now have to walk home in the drenching rain…qué divertido!)

Gearing up for Día de Independencia. ¡VIVA GUATEMALA!

Yesterday was a very touristic day as our group took a walking tour around the city. This city is incredible in its history and culture.

Yesterday: 7 am breakfast of pancakes, fruit, & juice. 8 am 1st class (scavenger hunt around the city). 1 pm lunch of meat patties & rice with veggies. 2 pm hike up to parque cerro de cruz where this photo is taken. afternoon=playing with Gaby (little sister, 7yrs old) & Ricardo (little brother, 16months) & reading for class about the history of Guatemala. 6pm dinner of beans, rice/egg omelet & fried platanos (big bananas). Early to bed at 830.
Today: Early to rise for a wonderful breakfast of french toast, fruit & chai tea latte today at Cafe Condesa in Parque Central with one of my house mates Meghan from TEXAS! Today is also election day for Guatemala. Reading & homework this afternoon. Group meeting & pizza hangout night at Dr. L’s house.

The first thing I see when I step out my door! Volcán Agua.

TEXAS.

Sitting in Houston, Texas. “The Great Nation” according to my Texan friends. (Shout out to y’all.)

A great last real American lunch of Burgers & Fries from Ruby’s is in my belly and I’m excited to get to Guatemala City in a few hours, have a more authentic meal and meet my first home-stay family.

I’m doing great so far & my team members are pretty ‘swick’. (sweet+sick). It’s going to be a great few months of study. Love you all.

The final countdown starts as I enter my last week in America. Final preparations are being made and the adventure is about to begin. I encourage you to sit back, relax and enjoy your cup of ‘cafe con leche’ as I get “Lost in Love of Guatemala”.
